What is pista ng pelikulang pilipino?

The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) is a week-long celebration of Philippine Cinema where new quality genre Filipino films are screened for one (1) week in all regular cinemas nationwide. No foreign film will be screened during PPP except in specialty cinemas to give the opportunity for the whole country to celebrate its own local films. This event is organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines in partnership with the National Cinema Association of the Philippines.

Cherie Gil is an award-winning actress and producer, known for Sonata (2013), Bituing walang ningning (1985) and Ngayon at kailanman (1992).

Joey Reyes

Jose Javier Reyes, or Joey Reyes, is a writer and director, known for Kasal, kasali, kasalo (2006), Loving Someone (1993) and Mga mumunting lihim (2012).

Sheron Dayoc

Sheron Dayoc is a Mindanaon filmmaker known for Halaw (2010), Mientras Su Durmida (2012), The Crescent Rising (2015), and Women of the Weeping River (2016).

Lee Briones-Meily

Lee Briones-Meily began her career as a photographer after studying Communication Arts at De La Salle. She then became a TV commercial producer for Image Films and Unitel Productions. After that, she became a full-pledged cinematographer in 1995 for TV commercials then shot Jeffrey Jeturians's first Film “Sana Pagibig Na” (1997) and won several Awards for Tanging yaman (2000).

Carlos Siguion-Reyna

Carlos Siguion-Reyna is a director and actor, known for Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal (1992), Azucena (2000) and Where I Am King (2014).

Manet Dayrit

Manet A. Dayrit is a film editor known for her work on José Rizal (1998), Mumbaki (1996) and The Wedding Curse (2006).

The Event

The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) is a week-long celebration of Philippine Cinema where new quality genre Filipino films are screened for one (1) week in all regular cinemas nationwide. No foreign film will be screened during PPP except in specialty cinemas to give the opportunity for the whole country to celebrate its own local films. This event is organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines in partnership with the National Cinema Association of the Philippines.it.

In the last two years, PPP has created a culture of support from the audience and FDCP intends to continue this tradition to continuously engage moviegoers nationwide to patronize local films.

Aim of the PISTA NG PELIKULANG PILIPINO

The Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino aims to:

  • Provide a platform for Filipino producers, especially independent film productions, to produce films that would connect to the wider Filipino audience via nationwide release;
  • To be the venue to encourage Filipino producers to produce films for the diverse and discerning taste of the Filipino audience;
  • To offer audience a variety of film genres with original narratives and unique storytelling, keeping in mind the nationwide market that the films are catering to;
  • To be the platform to discover local films that can cater to the domestic market and at the same time can find audiences beyond the Philippines;
  • To continue encouraging the culture of watching local films in cinemas.

This 2019, PPP will be the banner program for Sandaan, the official celebration of the One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema. This celebration will serve as the inspiration to make films that would define the Philippine film industry as it celebrates its 100th year.

Quality Genre Films

As an event dedicated to the mainstream audience, the PPP intends to showcase a diverse variety of elevated genre, ranging from family-oriented, to romantic comedy, horror, fantasy, historical films and the like or art house films that emulate Filipino sensibilities and culture, while at the same time having commercial and even global appeal.

Dates and Venues

The event will take place from Thursday 12th to the following Wednesday the 18th of September 2019 in ALL theaters nationwide (more than 900 cinemas), except specialty cinemas including, among others, IMAX, and 4DX.

Selection of Participating Films

For 2019, a total of eight (8) local films originating from the Philippines and having its Philippine Premiere in PPP will be selected and curated by a Selection Committee designated by the Chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. The FDCP Chairperson will serve as the Chair of the Committee.

A. Methods of Selection
  1. Three (3) film projects in its advanced stage of development or production stage will be selected. Deadline of submission is on March 8, 2019.
  2. Five (5) finished films or films in post-production will be selected. Deadline of submission is on May 31, 2019.

Among the final selection, a maximum of two (2) films will be accepted per genre e.g. romance, comedy, action etc. Each production company may only have a maximum of two (2) entries in the full lineup, including co-production and distribution partnerships.

The films will be screened during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino in more than nine hundred (900) regular screens throughout the country.

 

B. Eligibility for Projects in Advanced Stage of Development or Production Stage

The event is open to independent production companies with film projects in its advanced stage of development or in production stage. Submission is open to co-productions which are encouraged.

Production Company may submit as many entries but only one (1) project will be accepted as part of the final selection.

Six (6) entries will be shortlisted and will be required to do a live pitch to the Selection Committee which will then select three (3) final entries.

Eligible entries must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Submitting Production Company must be an independent production company and must either be a member of the PMPPA (Philippine Motion Picture Producers Association) or must have produced at least two films that were theatrically released in commercial cinemas.
  2. The film should have themes reflective of the Filipino sensibilities with wide audience appeal.
  3. The film should have been produced from 2018-2019.
  4. The film must have its Philippine premiere during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and must not have been previously shown in any format in the country.
    *Films which premiered internationally are eligible.
  5. The film should have a minimum of 75 minutes and a maximum of 180 minutes in length.
  6. The film must be submitted with English subtitles.
  7. As a technical requirement, the film must be intended to be mixed in at least 5.1 audio format or higher.
  8. The production Company must have an in-house distributor or distribution company attached to the project.
  9. The production Company must submit a marketing plan and distribution strategy.
C. Eligibility for Finished Films or Films in Post-Production

The event is open to ALL PRODUCERS (independent film production or corporate film studios) with a full length feature film project directed by a Filipino director.

Production Company must submit a finished film or a film in its final production stage (rough cut or picture lock).

Production Company may submit as many entries but a maximum of two (2) will be accepted including co-produced projects as part of the final selection.

 

Eligible film entries must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. The film should have themes reflective of the Filipino sensibilities culture with wide audience appeal.
  2. The film should have been produced from 2018-2019.
  3. The film must have its Philippine premiere during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino and must not have been previously shown in any format in the country.
  4. *Films which premiered internationally are eligible.
  5. The film should have a minimum of 75 minutes and a maximum of 180 minutes in length.
  6. The film must be submitted with English subtitles.
  7. As a technical requirement, the film must be mixed in at least 5.1 audio format or higher.
  8. The producer must have an in-house distributor or distribution company attached to the project.
  9. Production Company must submit Marketing plan and distribution strategy.

CO-PRODUCTION AND MARKETING GRANTS

Selected projects in advanced stage of development or production stage will receive a co-production fund of up to 2 Million Pesos - 1 Million Pesos worth of production equipment from CMB Film Services and up to 1 Million Pesos worth of marketing and distribution grant.

For selected projects from the finished films or films in post-production stage by independent production companies, they will receive a co-production fund of up to 2 Million - 1 Million Pesos worth of publicity and promotion from our sponsors and up to 1 Million Pesos worth of marketing and distribution grant.

SINE KABATAAN

Sine Kabataan is a short film competition of Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino which provides a platform for the youth to voice their stories through film.

Eligible full feature films must be willing to hardlock short film counterparts (2-5 minutes) from the Sine Kabataan Short Film which will be showcased during PPP.

ASSIGNMENT OF THEATERS

Theater assignments for the eight (8) films will be determined by the FDCP and the theaters involved. A minimum of forty-five (45) screens will be assigned to each film upon the opening of PPP with a guaranteed 3 days of screening unless during extreme cases. Depending on the cinema involved, extreme cases constitute those with zero to less than expected turnout of audience during screening. After three days, it will be the theaters discretion to replace low performing titles with their preferred titles provided that all films will still have at least 20 screens until the end of the run. Extension of screening beyond the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino will be based on the box office performance of the film.

SPECIAL FEATURE FILMS

There will be special feature films to be curated by the FDCP as guest entries in selected theater branches with more than eight (8) screens. This year, 4-6 classic films will be showcased in the special feature section in celebration of 100 years of Philippine Cinema.

AWARDS

On the 3rd day of screening there will an awards night ceremony during PPP Thanksgiving Night / PPP Pasasalamat. The theme of the events for PPP 2019 will be fiestas of Mindanao. The following awards will be given:

Entries must be submitted to the FDCP office with the following requirements on or before March 9, 2019 with a corresponding entry fee of P 5,000.00 issued via cash or via manager’s check made to the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

  • Letter of Intent Addressed to FDCP Duly Accomplished Entry Form with Notarized Certification Form and the following attachments:
  • Synopsis
  • Lead actors and lead actress profile
  • Biography and Filmography of the Director, Producer and Writer (1 page)
  • Production Company Profile (1 page)
  • Directors Statement about the project (1 page)
  • Detailed budget and financial plan. If applicable, structure of co-production.

  • 3-pages Marketing and Distribution Strategy

  • Proof of concept in audio-visual format via USB or secured online link. This can be teaser or pitch trailer of the film
For Finished Films or Films in Post-Production

Entries must be submitted to the FDCP office with the following requirements on or before the following dates with the corresponding entry fees issued via cash or via manager’s check made to the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

  • April 15 -30 - P 5,000.00
  • April 30 – May 15 - P 7,000.00
  • May 15- 31 - P 10,000.00

C. A watermarked screener copy of the film (For Consideration: Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino) must be submitted via seven (7) DVD copies. Secured online link and password to be sent to a secured email address.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINALISTS

Selected films in advanced stage of development or production stage will be announced by the 25 th of March 2019 while the selected finished films or films in post-production will be announced by third week of June 2019.

AGREEMENT

Submission to Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino constitutes agreement to all rules, regulations and conditions contained in this document and certifies that all film and music rights and production clearances have been obtained (in accordance with any and all existing applicable laws). By submitting, the filmmaker agrees not to withdraw the film from the event after it has been selected.

Submission of Entries

  • May 7-May 21, 2018 - P 7,000.00
  • May 22- June 15, 2018 - P 10,000.00

Entry payments may be through cash or via manager’s check made to the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

A watermarked screener copy of the film (For Consideration: Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino) must be submitted via seven (7) DVD copies AND a secured online link along with the following requirements:

FILM DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is the national film agency responsible for film policies and programs to ensure the economic, cultural and educational development of the Philippine film industry. It aims to encourage the production of quality films and to conduct film-related events that enhance the skills of the Filipino talents. The agency also leads the film industry’s participation in domestic and foreign film markets, and local and international film festivals, and is tasked to preserve and protect films as part of the country’s national cultural heritage.
